Work and Game of Thrones

Another busy day. Monitor for one of the Localizers was acting flaky. Turns out that its antenna was covered in ice. Ended up changing out a blower fan in the VOR today. The monitor for the localizer is at the VORTAC and when I walked in today it was screaming. The bearings in the fan were failing and this is its way of telling me. Changed it out since I had already ordered a new fan figuring I would change it soon. The old fan was nasty. Not sure how long its been in the VOR but there must have been at least ten or more years of dirt on it. Very nasty.

While doing a software upgrade on the ARTS radar system I was listening to George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones. He is very harsh with some of his characters. I had one of those I'm warming up to this character moments and then some thing bad happened.

Yeah, I finally gave up on Martin after he killed the same character for the third or fourth time. I just wasn't enjoying it at all.

I read Game of Thrones and while I generally enjoyed it, I was dismayed that just about each time I latched onto a protagonist character I wanted to root for, that character either got offed or maimed or both, sometimes even in that order, while the villains got to pretty much have their cake and eat it, too. Makes it hard to want to keep reading.

I've been told that most of what put me off about the first book isn't as problematic in later books, but haven't made the time or effort to see for myself.
