I've been waiting for this one for some time and guess what its very good. It's an excellent retelling of Batman's origin and also his first case. You get to meet most of the Batman cast in some very similar and very different versions. I like the new Alfred very much. The story telling is great I really like how Geoff Johns linked the Waynes to the Arkhams together with Martha being an Arkham. Gary Franks art is just wonderful here he makes the fight scenes dynamic and he really makes Gotham a very creepy and scary place. This is a great book it has both a Batman: Year One feel and a Batman Begins reality to it.

Story: 4+ (Nice to see Johns telling a very tight story.)
Art: 4+ (Lots of fun scenes and other cool details.)
Re-readability: 4 (Lots, this is a great book to pull down from your shelf from time to time.)

Ratings are from 1 (Very very bad) to 5 (a truly great book) pluses and minuses help to add depth to ratings.

Here is an example of one of my reviews. I try not to give spoilers and my reviews are a bit sparse unless for some reason I get unusually chatty about a review. So here it is.

Issue 9

Now its the Apollo and Midnighter show. They took out a Red Lantern pretty quickly. While the rest of the team captured the Vitruvian Man. He imparts some knowledge about Stormwatchs' past. It's funny that they have the Martian Manhunter being the living equivalent of the Neuralyzer from MIB this issue.

Story: 3 (New writer not a bad start.)
Art: 3+ (Good art.)
Re-readability: 3 (Some but not sure if this is the start of a new arch or just a filler until the next one starts.)

Ratings are from 1 (Very very bad) to 5 (a truly great book) pluses and minuses help to add depth to ratings.

Catching up on some comic reading these last few days. With all the stuff happening at work and M's parents visiting I hadn't really had time to read anything during May. I do reviews of comics on a local comic forum and since I'm so far behind I'm limiting my reviews to just stuff that in good, interesting, number ones and stuff that is so bad that others must be warned.

I had a pretty good con this year except for an irritating passenger in my vehicle. He was annoying kid who new everything and would not shut up. We started calling him Donny as in "Shut the fuck up Donny!"

As usual spent way to much money but did get some neat stuff. Several pages from artists and several original sketches. Personal favorite is the Martian Manhunter that George Perez did for me in his new art book. Still in a lot of pain from all that standing around in line. Waited a long time for Joe Kubert but it was worth it. Very nice guy. Neal Adams was nice too but he charged for his autograph.

Thought this was very funny and very true.

Had a really good time. Even though I didn't get out of the dealers room. There really wasn't much in the way of panels that I wanted to see anyway. WWC is mostly a media con now. Even so there were several comic guests. Speaking of which I got Azzarello, Risso and Johnson to sign the covers of Batman Knight of Vengeance. Words, art and cover in that order. I have found this to be the most surprising of the Flashpoint event. Azzarello threw in so very cool twists.
Bought three pages from J. Calafiore, one from Doom Patrol and two from Secret Six, they are all great. Four sketches Patrick Gleason, Freddie Williams, Rodrick DeJesus and Steve Ott. All of them the Martian Manhunter. Bought lots of Japanese cookies, four hard back trades, and two Mattel figures the assembled Stel and the Alexander Luthor and Ultraman Figures set.

Next year looks like its going to be a big year for Chicago conventions. As of right now I'm planning on C2E2 and Worldcon. Might go to WWC next year but that depends on how things go for the other conventions.

Not sure this would have been any good but it sure looks fun.

I just like the concept of a High School Barbara Gordon crushing on Bruce Wayne. I think this is weird enough that it might have worked.

Didn't get called into work today. That was a relief. I've been called in a lot during the last few weeks. I don't mind the overtime but I would like to get some rest.

We had our annual Secret Santa tonight. The guy I got couldn't make it, he was sick. I got him a reissued Mego Superman action figure. Turns out he had me so I don't know what he got me. We had a swap/give away of old comics and trades we didn't want anymore. I made out pretty good on that. When I first showed up at the meeting I was told about a new Kamandi figure from Mattel's DC 75 anniversary line exclusive at Walmart after the meeting I and another member of our group headed over there and picked up the one of each of the Kamandi since he was a fan of the character too. Kamandi is a character I never thought that would ever have a figure since he was such an obscure character. Now all they need is some of his support characters like Doctor Canus, dog man and Tuftan the tiger man prince. It would make a great diorama.
So sorry about my nerd out there. ;)

It was great! Dr Fate even got the Martian Manhunter powered up again. We also got Amanda Waller, Checkmate and the Suicide Squad awesome.

Haven't done a lot today. Watched BSG and some home improvement shows on PBS. But really just haven't felt like doing much today. Don't know if I'm fighting off a cold or a case of the lazy.
Been catching up on my comics realized that I hadn't read the previous issue of JSA before the current one. I liked the ending of the Kingdom Come story line.

Well I didn't fall down at work today. That's a win.

Picked up my comics today. This weeks and last.
Dresden Files: Storm Front
Top 10: Season Two
Blue Beetle
Justice League of America
Justice Society of America
Legion of Super-Heroes
Star Wars Legacy
The Boys

I don't get that many anymore. Mostly DC and some others. I don't think I currently have any Marvel comics in my pull box. Although I do like what Marvels doing with their cosmic titles. Those I decided to pick up in trades.

After getting back from church had to throw some salt on the side walk around the house. We got about a 1/4 inch of ice over pretty much everything last night. Only fell down once while spreading the salt. Hurt my knee a little and maybe my back I should feel in more tomorrow. I've really got to be more careful I've fallen at least three times this year and we are not even half way though the season.

Had our annual comic meeting secret Santa exchange. I think the person I had liked what I got him and made for him. I ended up getting the two trades from the O'Neil and Adams run of Green Lantern Green Arrow. I've always wanted to read this but never had gotten around to getting the trades.

Finished Portal from the Orange Box game. Fun game really makes you think. The dry humor of the computer was great. I'm looking forward to future sequels of this game. I have played some Team Fortress 2 its a fun little game with very amusing characters. I looking forward to playing the various Half Life 2 games now.

Picked up Absolute Batman Hush on sale awhile back. Just finished reading it after rediscovering it under a pile of other books. Beautifully drawn by Jim Lee. He's very talented and really has a gift for making Batman look really cool. I did figure out who Hush was pretty quickly although I don't think the author was trying to hide it from the readers. Well worth the money I paid for it.

Maria colored her hair today. The new dark color is very striking. I like it a lot.

Short reviews of some of the comics I picked up this week.

GEN13 #1
Simone, Caldwell and Banning
Looks like Wildstorm is going through a reboot of several of its comics. This is a retelling of the origin of Gen13. The writing is good, the story moved along well. Pencils and Inks aren't bad, sometimes a little primitive in spots, but still better than some other artists I can name. In all not a bad effort. I'll pick up the next few issues to see if they do anything new with it.

Star Wars Legacy #4
Ostander and Foreman
I started picking this one up when it started four issues ago. I was in the mode for some Star Wars stuff and this one seemed like a good place to start. Less baggage then some of the other books. Also I'm a fan of Ostander's writing. This issue was very well written. It was the story of a new stormtrooper just getting his first assignment and all the culture shook of being the newbie in the group. This series has shown steady improvement with each issue. If it stays like this I'll be reading it for awhile.

52 #23
Not much to say about this other than I loved the Island of the Mad Scientists.

Martian Manhunter #3
Lerberman, Barrionuevo and Bit
This is an interesting mini series which I picked up because of my interest in the character. Still not sure where its going and sometimes it seems like J'onn is kind of out of character. The story is interesting and the art is good so I'll keep reading it for now.
